New Quiet Phone Pro

Over two years in development, the Quiet Phone Pro (model designator: QPP) utilizes the latest tweaks to noise canceling technology. The Quiet Phone Pro is a “modular” product concept, with optional boom-microphone options.

The active noise canceling technology uses two small microphones placed deep inside each headphone speaker and wired to a differential amplifier that can switch them in or out of phase. As the microphones listen to the outside ambient noise as well as the headphone audio from the rig, stereo, or armrest jack on a plane, the out-of-phase background noises are greatly reduced, particularly in the lower-frequency range (below about 400 Hz).

Special attention has been directed, as well, toward RFI suppression. Both ferrite beads and RF bypass capacitors have been employed in the Quiet Phone Pro, making it much less susceptible to RFI problems than are other noise-reducing headphones. There is no in-line box for PTT control, as on the earlier Pro Set Quiet Phones.

The Quiet Phone Pro is powered by a single AAA battery (typical life: about 70 hours), and it includes its own volume control. The Quiet Phone Pro folds inward for easy packing when traveling, and its audio cord is detachable at the headset. Two cords are packed with each QPP: one is a coiled cord with a right-angle 1/8” (3.5 mm) plug that fits into most airliner arm rests (or Ham rigs), and the other is a 6-foot HeilWire straight cable, also with a 1/8” plug. Both plugs are gold-plated! An adapter for ¼” phone jacks is also included. And since the cord can be detached, someone seated over the wing on a 737, who wants to sleep, can just detach the cord, turn on the noise reduction, and the jet noise from the engine will be seriously reduced. It really is quite effective, and the Quiet Phone Pro is extraordinarily comfortable, too.

Quiet Phone Pro Boom Systems

The boom system of the Quiet Phone Pro features a brass insert imbedded into the headset. The boom then is affixed to the earmuff using a large thumb screw that securely holds the boom in place.

The mount is rugged, the boom is totally flexible, and as a result the boom can be adjusted to hang from the left or right ear of the operator, as desired.

The HC-6 combines the full-SSB-bandwidth of the HC-5 element with almost as much articulation as the HC-4 “DX Dream Machine” element, resulting in a transmitted envelope that is, at once, full of bottom-end fidelity but with lots of “brightness” on the high-frequency side. Consonant sounds have lots of “punch” for DX pile-ups, yet the richness of the dynamic element’s full range sounds wonderful during a rag chew.

Heil crafted the HC-6 as a response to the evolution of today’s rigs. Many transceivers today have DSP-based adjustment capability that includes bandwidth selections and frequency equalization. The low-frequency expansion downward provides greater maximum fidelity for those occasions when it is needed, while the +8 dB rise around 2500 Hz places this peak in response right where scientists at Bell Labs discovered, over 75 years ago, that human hearing at low levels is most sensitive. Thus, when conditions are difficult, concentrating transmitter energy in this upper frequency range helps get the operator’s callsign and other information through most efficiently.

FS-2 Dual Foot-switch
The Heil model FS-2 Dual Footswitch is an ergonomically correct device with the hinge being UNDER your heel instead of away from your foot as with all other footswitches. This requires much less effort and relaxes the leg muscles during long periods of operation such as contest and DxPedition operations. The hinge is a solid bar running the compete width of the footswitch assembly thus eliminating screws or fasteners that may work loose. The FS-2 is designed for maximum comfort and reliability. The Heil Dual Footswitch is a unique product specifically designed for controlling TWO devices simultaneously. Two 10 amp micro-switches are mounted so that the one feeding the RED lead turns on first and the BLACK lead turns on last. A typical application would be to key a transceiver with the BLACK lead and an RF power amplifier with the RED lead. This unique Heil footswitch eliminates any active interface problems between transceivers and RF amplifiers.The BLACK lead is terminated in a ¼" male phone plug that connects into the PTT line of the Heil CC-1 microphone cable system. The RED lead comes to you with an RCA male adapter which mates with most keying inputs of RF amplifiers in use today.
